What is Google Trends?

Google Trends is a free tool that is useful for obtaining data from Google searches and allows users to compare the appearance of certain search terms with other keywords based on frequency, geographical locations and much more.

It started as a conduit to analyze and consolidate the interest of online users in different topics. But, it just didn't stop there. Google Trends has gradually transformed into an ultimate data utilization tool that takes into account public reactions to real-time events or other trending stories.

With Google Trends, you can quickly narrow down the occurrences of industry-specific keywords online by setting a time frame, for example, in the last seven days or from the previous year to the current year.

Why use Google Trends?

Google Trends is the best option to analyze the popularity of any search term or topic without complications.

With this tool, you can track users' search behavior, compare and validate search volumes for different queries, leverage historical data to check the popularity phase of a topic. The tool is free, up-to-date and relevant.

Google Trends is easy to use. When you search for a certain query, it will provide you with a graph ranging from 0 to 100.

While 0 indicates not enough search data denoting low search volume, 100 represents the peak popularity of the topic you searched for. The higher the number, the higher the search for the keyword. Therefore, keywords that land near or in the 100th need your attention.

And that simplifies keyword research like never before.

How Google Trends works?

Now, let me walk you through the step-by-step process of doing keyword research with Google Trends.

Okay. You have four tabs here.

The first denotes the geographical location that used the given keyword. For a broader perspective, you can choose the "World" option on this tab.

The second tab indicates the time period of the keyword's frequency. Choose anywhere from the last hour to 2004-Present.

Once you modify the time frame and location, the chart is modified accordingly.

In the "interest by region" section, click "region" in the upper right corner and click "city" to see the report by city. Every time you choose a different location, you get a unique set of data from Google Trends.

The last section of the page features "Related Topics" and "Related Queries." This is where you get more suggestions based on your search term.

It has a detailed "breakdown" for each query.
